The Pastels - Truckload of Trouble

The period between about '89 and '94 (a couple years in either direction might work, too) are my least favorite years of the recorded music era. That's the period between the changes in sample legality and a real American underground revival. Unless you *really* liked that Pixies shtick, records of that time mostly sucked. Even some of the stuff from that time that I liked (Shimmy Disc, later rap music, bop revival jazz) doesn't hold up so hot today.

There were a couple of winners from then, though. And this is one of them. The Pastels didn't really fit with the time - they make a lot more sense ten years down the road. That's because a lot of the bands from the late 90's learned a lot from them. Yo Lan Tengo and Wilco come to mind.

This is a compilation that starts at the beginning and goes through a bunch of lineup changes and style shifts. Through it all, they have a real easy-going shambling feel and a good way with a pop hook. I'm curious what others think about this one, so do leave a comment.

Yup, I'm digging this. I love the high-school sloppy horn section on some of the tracks. Great pop. Not the hook-iest pop I've heard but the production, instrumentation, and arrangements are all really high quality.
I hear in this band both the Cincinnati band Lazy (especially in the vocals) and the New Zealand band The Chills.

I'm with "simon" on this one: mid-80's to early 90's.

This is a really good compilation though. Reminds me a lot of Jesus and Mary Chain combined with Beat Happening. Fav songs are "Thru' Your Heart" and "Dark Side Of Your World." Quality stuff!

Simon - I've never been able to get to a bunch of these bands, especially Pavement. They just don't seem like they are trying very hard. And Goo was one of the most disappointing albums I've ever bought.

You've got to admit, even if you love all this stuff, that the production on most of these records is dated and crummy. I just can't stand that crisp drum sound on a lot of these. About the only one of these albums that I can still listen to is Mudhoney, because Jack E recorded it on analogue equipment.

The whole thing with Wilco is that they borrow liberally from the feel of the Pastels. Otherwise, I can't stand them, either. But I'm a big fuckin' curmudgeon.

Once upon a time i never got the pastels, but now they are one of my favourite bands. Their later album Illumination maybe theire best. still active, altough "active" may be too strong a word. i saw them twice last year, once at the geographic day in glasgow ( label run by Stephen and Katrina Pastel) and later supporting the Jesus & mary Chain in london.

They have been working on tywo albums for some time now, one with japanese popsters The tenniscoats (who joined them in glasgow) and the other a pure Pastels album. word is tha tits GREAT. Norman Blake & Gerry Love from Teenage Fanclub are currently playing bass and guitar in the band, Norman on bass and Gerry on guitar, the reverese of their fanny roles.

LOVE 'EM but not as much as the Fannies.

Oh Tortoise's joohn MacEntyre is producing (as he did the last TFC album Manmade)
